Periodontal disease
The periodontics is the area of dentistry specialised in treating infections of the periodontium, i.e. the various tissues that surround and support the teeth. More specifically, this includes the gums, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and cementum.
This periodontal infection is of bacterial origin. It generally occurs when immune mechanisms are weakened. Bacteria accumulate on the tooth surface and multiply, then migrate and progressively penetrate the gums without any sensation of pain. Periodontitis first manifests as gum inflammation that then extends to the bone tissue, forming infected pockets between the gum and the tooth.
It goes without saying that without periodontal treatment, this infection can lead to bone destruction, gum recession or tooth loss.
Causes of periodontal disease
The periodontal disease is a common disease affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth and can have a direct impact on your general health.
The causes of this disease are generally linked to an imbalance of the oral flora combined with immune system failure, due to:

Symptoms of periodontal disease
- Swelling, bleeding and redness of the gums: they can sometimes be painful when brushing.
- The formation of abscesses on receding teeth (pockets between the gum and the root surface).
- One or more loose teeth.
- Bad breath and a bad taste in the mouth.
