Periodontal disease

The periodontics is the area of dentistry specialised in treating infections of the periodontium, i.e. the various tissues that surround and support the teeth. More specifically, this includes the gums, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and cementum.

This periodontal infection is of bacterial origin. It generally occurs when immune mechanisms are weakened. Bacteria accumulate on the tooth surface and multiply, then migrate and progressively penetrate the gums without any sensation of pain. Periodontitis first manifests as gum inflammation that then extends to the bone tissue, forming infected pockets between the gum and the tooth.

It goes without saying that without periodontal treatment, this infection can lead to bone destruction, gum recession or tooth loss.

Causes of periodontal disease

The periodontal disease is a common disease affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth and can have a direct impact on your general health.

The causes of this disease are generally linked to an imbalance of the oral flora combined with immune system failure, due to:

  • Poor oral hygiene: improper or no toothbrushing can lead to plaque buildup and its hardening into tartar, the leading cause of gum inflammation, bleeding and swelling.
  • The presence of certain diseases such as diabetes.
  • Excessive tobacco or alcohol consumption.
  • An unbalanced diet: a diet too high in sugars (glucose, fructose, maltose and lactose), saturated fats, and unbalanced in proteins and vitamins C and D.
  • Age: the older one gets, the higher the risk of having a periodontal disease is.
  • Certain hormonal changes in women such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause.

Symptoms of periodontal disease

  • Swelling, bleeding and redness of the gums: they can sometimes be painful when brushing.
  • The formation of abscesses on receding teeth (pockets between the gum and the root surface).
  • One or more loose teeth.
  • Bad breath and a bad taste in the mouth.

It is therefore essential to consult your periodontist as soon as the first symptoms appear and to act without delay to prevent the infection from spreading.

A periodontal treatment combined with good oral hygiene will be sufficient to eliminate all traces of the periodontal disease.

We will be happy to welcome you for regular check-ups to prevent any risk of infection. Please contact our dental practice in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.

Frequently asked questions — Periodontology

Is periodontal disease common?

Yes, periodontal disease affects around 50% of adults in one form or another. It is often silent at first: only a dental check-up can detect it early.

How does periodontal treatment work?

Treatment starts with a deep cleaning (root planing) under local anaesthesia. Regular periodontal maintenance sessions (every 3 to 6 months) are then required to prevent recurrence.

Is periodontal treatment painful?

Root planing is performed under local anaesthesia. After-effects are mild (gum sensitivity for 2–3 days). The treatment is well tolerated by the vast majority of patients.

Is periodontal disease treatment reimbursed?

The periodontal assessment and scaling are covered by French national health insurance. Some periodontal surgical procedures may require prior authorisation. Our practice is sector 1 (conventionné).

Does smoking worsen periodontal disease?

Yes, smoking is a major risk factor. It reduces gum blood supply, masks bleeding and slows healing. Smoking cessation is part of the treatment plan.
